FTUIY Episode #39: Mely Raygoza

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Written: Dr. Jaime G. Raygoza

In this week's episode on the Finding the Unicorn in You podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing my sister, Melissa Raygoza, a talented author and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.

Motherhood & Postpartum

Our conversation was filled with valuable insights and heartfelt stories about Melissa's journey as a new mother, an author, and the importance of representation. In this blog post, I want to share the key themes we discussed and the valuable advice Melissa offered.

Melissa opens up about her experience with motherhood and the challenges she faced during the postpartum period. She candidly shares the emotional rollercoaster she went through, highlighting the importance of mental health support for new mothers. Melissa emphasizes the significance of normalizing conversations about postpartum struggles and providing a safe space for women to seek help and share their experiences.

As we discuss the topic of postpartum, Melissa reflects on her own journey and how she navigated the ups and downs. She acknowledges the immense pressure society places on mothers to have it all together, often leading to feelings of inadequacy. Melissa's story serves as a reminder that it's essential to prioritize self-care and seek support from loved ones and professionals when needed.

LGBTQIA+ Advocacy

Later in the interview, Melissa mentions her book, "Queerasaurs". She illustrated and helped write the book alongside her brother, Jaime G Raygoza. (That's me if you were wondering!)

Through her book "Queerasaurs," Melissa aims to create a more inclusive world for children, shedding light on the LGBTQIA+ community and promoting acceptance. She passionately advocates for representation and the normalization of diverse identities and love stories. Melissa believes that every child should feel seen, heard, and loved for who they are, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

In our conversation, Melissa and I explore the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on shaping attitudes and fostering empathy. By sharing personal experiences and stories, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society where everyone feels valued and accepted.

We also touch on the importance of advocating for the rights of the transgender community, particularly in light of recent discriminatory legislation. Melissa emphasizes the need to stand alongside transgender individuals, offering support and fighting for their rights. She highlights the significance of respect, acknowledging and affirming each person's identity and experiences.

Personal Development Journey

Melissa's journey has been one of growth and transformation. She discusses the challenges she faced when moving away from her family, recognizing her dependence on them and the need to establish her own identity. By stepping out of her comfort zone and embracing change, Melissa discovered new opportunities for personal development and self-discovery.

In our conversation, Melissa offers valuable advice for those feeling stuck or stagnant in their lives. She encourages individuals to challenge themselves, make small changes, and step out of their comfort zones. By embracing discomfort, we open ourselves up to new experiences and opportunities for growth.

As we near the end of our conversation, Melissa shares an inspiring piece of advice she received from a high school teacher: "Good, better, best, never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best." She applies this mantra to every aspect of her life, constantly striving for improvement and growth. Melissa believes that we all have the potential to become our best selves if we challenge ourselves, remain accountable for our actions, and embrace change.

Lessons Learned:

Melissa stresses the need to challenge oneself, embrace discomfort and take accountability for growth. Her independence came from acknowledging her dependence on others. Communication is key.

The Unicorn Within:

By following her heart and convictions, Melissa tapped into her unicorn potential for integrity, courage, and impact. She exemplifies what it means to evolve through self-discovery. Melissa inspires others to stay true to themselves.

Unicorn Lesson:

The key takeaway from Melissa's journey is that becoming your best self requires embracing discomfort. Move beyond dependence and complacency by seeking new challenges. Maintain accountability in your growth. Connect through open communication and unapologetic self-expression. Have the courage to advocate for marginalized communities. Living authentically allows your inner unicorn to emerge.

Conclusion

Before we conclude, I would like to again express my pride and admiration for Melissa's journey and her accomplishments. As a mother, she is nurturing her child with love and care while continuously striving to be the best version of herself. I have no doubt that Melissa will continue to make a positive impact in her career and create amazing things in life.
